Hyundai Commits $15.5 Billion to India as It Seeks to Win Back Ground in a Booming Car Market

Hyundai Motor Group has pledged $15.5 billion to India over the next seven years. It is one of the largest single commitments by a foreign carmaker in the country, and it comes as competition in the world’s third-largest car market intensifies.

The announcement came on Tuesday in New Delhi, after Executive Chair Euisun Chung met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a statement, Chung described India as one of the group’s most important markets and said the commitment looks 30 years ahead.

Where the money will go

The plan covers 2026 to 2032 and spreads across the business. Hyundai said it will expand manufacturing capacity at Hyundai Motor India and its sister brand Kia India, build more research and development infrastructure, and deepen its network of local suppliers. About $700 million is earmarked for research and development.

The group will set up a dedicated investment entity in India to coordinate the spending and to identify local partners. Hyundai said the programme will create jobs across manufacturing, engineering and supply chains, though it gave no figure. The group already employs more than 24,000 people in the country.

Indian media reports said the plan includes the launch of 26 new vehicles over the period.

Why India, and why now

India is Hyundai’s fourth-largest market, behind North America, South Korea and Europe. The company’s Indian operations have a combined production capacity of about 1.4 million vehicles, and it also uses the country as an export base.

For years Hyundai held the number two position in the Indian passenger car market. It lost that ranking in 2025, which helps explain the scale of the new commitment. Analysts had been watching for a response as rivals poured money into new models and factories.

The announcement also follows a similar move by Suzuki, which said in 2025 that it would spend more than $8 billion in India over five to six years and aims to double its production capacity by the end of the decade.

What it means for the industry

For the Indian government, the pledge is a welcome endorsement of its push to turn the country into a manufacturing and export hub. Local sourcing is a particular priority. Hyundai said it will make strategic investments in regional partners to help localise parts production, which could create business for component makers.

For buyers, a bigger product pipeline and larger local production could mean more choice and more competitive pricing. Car sales in India have been growing, and manufacturers are racing to capture a rising middle class that is trading up from two-wheelers.

For rivals, the announcement raises the stakes. A seven-year spending plan of this size signals that Hyundai intends to compete for volume as well as profit. Established players such as Maruti Suzuki, along with newer entrants, will have to match that ambition.

Market reaction

Shares of Hyundai Motor India were among the stocks in focus in Indian trading on Wednesday as investors digested the news. Analysts will want more detail on timing, on how much of the spending goes to new factories rather than upgrades, and on how electric vehicles fit into the product plan.

The road ahead

Large investment pledges are often announced in stages and revised over time, and a headline figure does not guarantee delivery on schedule. India’s infrastructure, regulatory environment and supplier base will also shape how quickly the plan turns into output.

Still, the message is clear. Hyundai wants to reclaim lost ground in a market where growth is strong, and it is prepared to commit billions to do so. The next few years will show whether new factories, new models and local partnerships are enough to restore its position.
