The power of understanding gives the power of travel

Power of Perception (POP) Founder and CEO Dennis Belle is offering a life-changing experience to 15 POP mentees this summer. From July 20 – August. 2, the consulting firm takes a group of high school students on a trip to South Africa.

“It’s a great opportunity for these kids to have a good time, to understand what different cultures are like, to travel internationally and to understand that it’s a whole other world,” he said.

Beale founded POP in February 2020 as a resource for African American or biracial youth in the Eau Claire area.

“Our mission is to create a valuable toolbox to equip these young kings and queens to become contributing citizens in today’s society,” he explained.

The trip was inspired by Beale’s experience after creating a black male booster group at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, which took 15 members on a research trip to London and Paris. Seeing how that experience changed the lives of those young people was life-changing for the holiday itself, and ever since, he’s kept that in mind when working on POP.

Along with the educational aspect of cultural immersion, the trip will include a safari, viewing a population of African penguins and a visit to the prison where Nelson Mandela was held, Baale said.

“I think[it’s]good exposure because I feel like as Americans, sometimes we take a lot of our freedoms and luxuries for granted,” he said. “Going to this country to see what poverty looks like from their perspective, compared to what we think poverty looks like, can be completely different and eye-opening. I think we should go there and see first hand how life-changing it is.

After returning from South Africa, the Pablo Center presents a documentary of the trip. One of the festival’s alumni videographers will be on the trip and filming it all, so stay tuned for news on when the documentary will take place.

“(Kids) at the heart of Black History Month, I want them to understand what black excellence looks like. That’s what black leaders look like,” he said.

His efforts alongside the POP team provide support and encouragement to the African American and biracial Eau Claire community, with the South African trip being a great example of this.
