From national travel insurance plans

International travel insurance offers many of the standard benefits you would normally see in a travel insurance policy. This can include things like trip cancellation cover, so you can recover an advance payment or trip interruption if your holiday is interrupted by an unforeseen event. Baggage delay cover and medical cover are also available.

Travel insurance policies offered nationwide are available to consumers and are categorized by type of trip: single trip, multiple trips or cruise coverage.

Single-trip travel insurance policies

Nationwide offers two single-trip travel insurance policies: the Basic Plan and the Basic Plan.

As the name suggests, the National Essentials Plan covers the basics. It provides some protection in case anything happens before or during your trip.

The Prime plan takes your coverage to the next level with higher coverage limits and the option to cancel coverage for any reason at an additional cost.

Both plans include trip cancellation or interruption coverage in the event of terrorism in your destination city, no extra charge from Nationwide Travel Assistance, and a 10-day evaluation period (except WA and NY). Note that there is a $500 combined maximum value limit for baggage and personal effects coverage (see your policy terms and conditions for details on what is considered value).

Here’s how the two plans stack up in terms of coverage limits. For travel delay coverage, you’ll be eligible to receive cash payments for expenses delayed for six hours or more.

Annual and multi-trip travel insurance policies

If you need travel insurance cover for more than one trip and want to cover your partner and children, the Travel Pro plan can be an affordable option. It is important to note that this guide only covers post-departure events, not pre-departure events. As of the time this guide was written, it could be as low as $59.

The Trip Plus Plan is another multi-trip policy from Nationwide that has variable time limits of up to $10,000 for trip interruption and cancellation coverage. This covers gaps from the Travel Pro plan, which only covers post-departure events. So if you need to cancel the trip due to a covered illness or other reason, this is the plan for you.

If you want to increase the level of benefits after your departure, the Travel Pro Deluxe Plan will do the same. It builds on the Travel Pro plan, hence the name, and includes higher coverage limits for just $20 more.

All plans include nationwide travel assistance included with single travel policies. Here’s how the multi-trip plans compare:

Travel cover

It offers three cruise insurance plans nationwide.

If you’re going on a short cruise or a first-time cruise, if you want extra protection and to recoup non-refundable expenses, the Universal Cruise Plan can be a good starting point. Check your eligibility based on your state, as cruise coverage is not available in all states.

If you are going on a longer cruise and need additional coverage to protect your trip, an optional cruise plan is an option to consider. And if you’re looking for more benefits and will be traveling on multiple cruises, the Luxury Cruise plan offers the most coverage options.

With the exception of WA and NY states, all three policies are refundable within a 10-day evaluation period.

Here’s a comparison of the coverage you get with three different cruise insurance policies from Nationwide:

More coverage options from nationwide

National Travel Insurance has a number of additional coverage options that can add extra protection to your policy, but also increase the cost. These include:

  • Rental car collision or loss coverage; If something happens to your rental car, you can add up to $25,000 or $35,000 to this coverage, depending on the plan. This is available on essential and primary single trip policies (except TX or NY).
  • Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR)It must be added to the policy and is available through the single-trip Prime Plan, the Choice Cruise Plan and the Luxury Cruise Plan.

How much does international travel insurance cost?

The cost of getting a nationwide travel insurance policy depends on a number of factors, including what kind of coverage you get, whether you buy any add-ons, your destination, the length of your trip, and more.

On the Nationwide website, you can get travel insurance policy quotes by providing:

  • destination
  • Date of departure
  • Return date

  • The first payment date of the trip

  • $196.89 for the original plan
  • $273.20 for the main plan

If you are 55 years old, traveling to Mexico on Carnival Cruise Lines in the first 10 days of January, and spending $4,000 with the first payment on September 1 and the last payment on November 30, your policy will:

Compare with Allianz nationally

It offers many types of insurance coverage nationwide. Although the company may be best known for auto insurance, it also offers travel insurance and has eight options. Allianz, a major player in the travel insurance space, has 10 options.

Allianz may offer higher coverage limits for the policies offered and a streamlined online claim process. The fact that it wins nationwide is that you can add Cancel for Any Reason (CFR) for an additional cost, but CFAR coverage isn’t available when you buy a policy online through Allianz.

Compare with John Hancock nationally

John Hancock is synonymous nationwide in offering a wide range of insurance offerings and financial services. One such provision is travel insurance. John Hancock offers travel insurance with bronze, silver and gold policies.

When comparing policies, the budget option may be slightly more affordable than the national one. However, medium and high coverage options can be more affordable at John Hancock. It depends on your policy, travel details and age. One good thing is that you can add Cancel for Any Reason (CFR) cover under all John Hancock plan options.

Compare credit card travel coverage nationwide

Rewards credit cards come with many benefits for cardholders, some of which you may not be aware of. One of such benefits can be trip interruption or coverage coverage as well as car rental coverage. Credit cards may have enough coverage for quick trips. However, if you want the peace of mind of having robust medical coverage or higher limits, it may be better to go the traditional travel insurance route.

method

For our nationwide travel insurance review, we looked at the leading travel insurance providers and compared the range of options offered, coverage limits, cost, customer service options and flexibility.

Nationwide is a top contender for cruise-related travel insurance policies and stands out for cancellation for any reason (CFAR) coverage, although not available with every policy and at an additional cost. To find the best travel insurance policy for you, review different providers and compare quotes before purchasing a policy.
