High school varsity football action Friday night saw North Stanley travel to Granite Quarry to take on the 3A East Rowan Mustangs, while South Stanley faced another 3A school, Southwest Randolph, at home.

North Stanley 30, East Rowan 14

The Comets got points on the board from multiple spots and tied the team record at 1-1 on the road over the Mustangs on the night.

BA Harris, who ran a kickoff return for a scrimmage against Ledford last week, picked up the fumble and returned it for a touchdown in the first quarter of Friday’s game.

Later, Gavin Covington intercepted a pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown, making it 13-0 North after the missed PAT.

North responded despite a fumble that led to East Rowan’s (0-2) first touchdown of the game. Cam Smith broke off a 25-yard touchdown run, the two-point conversion put North up 21-7.

The Mustangs scored a touchdown with 1:47 left in the first half to cut the lead to seven.

After a scoreless third quarter, Jay Jackson had a pick-six of his own. The extra point put North up 14 points, 28-14.

North also added a safety with 2:51 left in the game.

“Offensively, we got off to a slow start,” North Stanley head coach Scott Crisco said. But our defense stepped up and kept us in the game. To give up just one point and score 23 points was huge.

“I’m proud of the way we responded in the fourth quarter,” Crisco said. Our staff did a great job of keeping our players focused late in the game.

The Comets will face former conference rival North Rowan on the road Friday night. North Rowan shutout South Rowan 57-0 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Southwest Randolph 49, South Stanley 13

The Bulls fell to 0-2 on the season when the visiting Cougars built an early lead and never trailed.

Cougars QB Easton Clapp found Adam Cole for a 32-yard touchdown pass on the team’s second offensive play. The two-point conversion put the visitors up 8-0.

South got the first score on the first drive of the game and went for a fake point on the next fall set and turned the ball over.

Southwestern went to the air again when Clapp found Sean Adkins for a 16-yard TD pass.

On South Stanley’s three-and-out, Clapp found Cole for a 23-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field.

Cole and Asher Perkins added rushing touchdowns for the Cougars in the second quarter, then Cole’s fumble return gave the visitors a 42-point lead, which Southwestern had at halftime.

South Stanley got on the board on the run in the second half. Bulls quarterback Drew Gaddy threw a perfect throw in the left corner of the end zone over two defenders to Ezra Pau, who hauled in a 26-yard pass for a TD.

Southwestern Randolph added a 65-yard rushing touchdown from Clapp to make the score 49-6, but South responded with a six-yard TD pass from Gaddy to Tristan Patterson.

South Stanley hosts Carson (0-2) on Friday night. The Cougars lost to Mount Pleasant 34-28.
