Southwest frequent flyers, you may have just received a great upgrade to a higher standard.
Southwest is counting award flights flown between January 1, 2022, and September 19, 2022, toward tier requirements. Many Southwest Instant Rewards members have been notified of this promotion on their account pages, but no official announcement has been made. The news was first reported by Max Miles Points on Instagram.
According to the airline, award flights during this period will count towards tier class requirements. You earn A-list status by flying 25 classes in a calendar year, and A-list is selected when you fly 50 classes. You can also qualify by earning a certain number of rank points.

Normally, only paid flights count towards the class requirement.
Unfortunately, award flights don’t seem to count toward Company Pass criteria, as the notification only mentions status. Likewise, Southwest award flights flown after September 19, 2022 will not count as tier-eligible classes.
This is a shorthand for Southwest’s high-level eligibility requirements for frequent flyers. However, why only flights flying up to September 19 are counted as tier units is confusing. Redeeming flights to earn and redeem more Instant Rewards points at the end of the year is less likely to change consumer behavior.
Regardless, we hope other airlines follow suit with similar promotions. With pandemic-era extensions and qualifying promotions winding down, it’s a tough time for many airline elites to maintain their status until 2023.
