Lubbock, Texas – No. 16 Texas Tech defeated Grand Canyon 6-1 on Tuesday night at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders scored four runs in the first inning, riding a season-best six innings on Taber’s fasting arm.
“Taber is a competitor,” head coach Tim Tadlock said. “He didn’t feel great at first, but he battled through it and made some plays when he needed to. He got some shots down the stretch and made some noises. That’s as close to a guy as we’ve seen that whole fall. Good start for him.”
Quick’s one-run, two-hit performance was perfect despite walking three of the first six batters he faced. He settled and didn’t allow a base hit over the next 19 at-bats. The freshman’s only run allowed was on his first hit in the seventh inning, with a pitch, prompting Texas Tech to make the call to the bullpen.
If Quick had retired with one out in the seventh, this would have been the Red Raiders’ season-high, but he joins five other teammates that turned in six full innings this season; By 2023, no tech player is gone for long. Quick was effective as he got through the first five innings using 59 pitches. It took him nine runs to get through the sixth to raise his tally to 68 before he was out on 72 one stroke later in the seventh. He threw a career-best four strikeouts.
“I feel more confident about myself,” he said of Tuesday’s intense fast. “Going into this game I was more confident, and it was all about attitude. Knowing that I can go out and compete with these guys, I have confidence in myself at this level.”
The first of the two hits he gave up was an infield single in the third that was snapped back off his feet, and the second was a triple over the right-center field wall. On a night when GCU went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position, the runner was stranded at third.
The Red Raiders jumped on Grand Canyon by belting a pair of home runs in their first five at-bats. Ty Coleman hit a home run in a nine-pitch at-bat against leadoff hitter Nolen Hester, both of whom were two-run Jimmy Jacks. Kevin Buzzell followed with a single and hit a No. 5 home run off Gavin Cash, who smashed his Big 12-leading 17th home run to give Texas Tech a quick 4-0 lead.
Coleman slapped a 3-0 home run to lead off the fifth and cut the Red Raiders’ lead to 5-0. Coleman’s third multi-home run game marked his first in 2023. The senior entered Tuesday’s game with just one home run, hitting eight as a junior against the Red Raiders.
“I thought Ty came out there really aggressively in the first at-bat and had a long bat,” Tadlock said. “The guy made a mistake and he hit it, with the other one. It’s always fun when you have guys who know how to hit a pitch when it’s 3-0.”
Grand Canyon scored one run in the seventh. Brandon Beckel was in the lineup at first in relief of the bullpen and threw two innings. One of the three hits he allowed was a run-scoring double in the seventh.
Kyle Robinson finished the job in the ninth. Robinson hasn’t allowed a hit out of the bullpen in four straight innings since April 1 and against TCU.
