Sandeep Lamichhan has been granted permission to travel outside Nepal, paving the way for the ongoing Cricket World Cup (CWC) League 2 tri-series in Dubai. But completion of play will be subject to ICC approval.
Lamichhan was initially left out of the Nepal team after it was revealed that he would not be allowed to travel outside Nepal as per his bail conditions. Lamichhan, 22, was charged with having sex with another man and is currently out on bail.
But on Monday, he got permission from the Supreme Court in Nepal to travel abroad for the three-match series against the United Arab Emirates and Papua New Guinea.
Nepal Cricket Association General Manager Britant Kanal said the board has written to the ICC seeking permission to include Lamichhan in the Nepal team. Nepal started their campaign with a 4-0 win against Papua New Guinea in Dubai despite Lamichhan missing.
Last week, Lamichhan took 13 wickets in four matches in another CWC League 2 tri-series in Nepal involving Scotland and Namibia. That move helped Nepal win all four matches. He picked up three wickets in each of the first three games before picking up four in the last match against Scotland.
Lamichhe’s participation in the series drew protests from opponents and fans across the country, as well as on social media. He was suspended by CAN last year after an arrest warrant was issued following allegations against him. He was taken into police custody and granted bail, after his ban was lifted by CAN earlier this month and he was included in the squad for the three-match series against Namibia and Scotland.
Nepal is currently placed sixth in the seven-team Cricket World Cup League 2 league table. Lamichhan has taken 55 wickets in the tournament – the most for Nepal – and is third in the list of all-time wicket takers. He is the only Nepalese player to be featured in T20 leagues, IPL, BBL, PSL, BPL and CPL in most parts of the world.
