According to new data, air ticket sales purchased by US travel agencies in March increased 22 percent from March and set a record with ticket sales totaling $9.6 billion, according to the Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC).

The March 2023 result is the highest monthly total ever recorded by ARC. In addition to the regular increase in March as a popular travel time, growing demand for international travel helped boost monthly sales – international travel grew 17 percent from March 2022 and 14 percent from February 2023.

Over the month, air ticket sales increased 15 percent, total passenger travel increased 15 percent, and US domestic travel increased 16 percent.

According to the data, trips made in March increased by 4 percent compared to last year: a total of 25.8 million trips. The average domestic airfare is $559. While that number is 4 percent higher than in the spring of 2022, it is still 2 percent lower than in February, when the average was $571.

“ARC’s airline ticket data supports the strong spring and summer demand for corporate and leisure travel we’re hearing from airlines,” said Steve Solomon, ARC’s chief commercial officer. “A large portion of summer demand is for top European destinations such as London, Paris and Rome, which are seeing higher year-over-year air travel ticket purchases from U.S. travelers.”
