Kathleen Bangs of Flalaware.com advises fall and winter holiday travelers to buy tickets, as she predicts prices will rise again in the fall.
Don’t be fooled by temporary drops in airline tickets, an expert told FOX Weather that prices are going back up and airlines are cutting back on flights for the fall and holidays. The next several weeks are the time to buy holiday airline tickets on a budget.
“After the chaos of the summer, I am very happy to say that the prices are already decreasing. Now, normally, they have dropped by 10 to 15%. [through] Anyway, the end of August and September. “But this year, we’re actually looking at a 25% drop in prices and availability should be very good,” commercial pilot and FlyAware spokeswoman Kathleen Bangs told FOX Weather. There are plenty of seats available at very good prices later this year.”

Bangs noted that prices fell when kids went back to school and have historically fallen. This year, most airlines have seen early demand for holiday travel. Perhaps, after the Covid-19 restrictions and fears over the past two years, travelers felt the urge to travel. Therefore, as more people have already gone on vacation, the drop in ticket prices is more pronounced.

“But buy those tickets in the next six weeks because once we get to October, the fares are going to go up again,” Bangs said. “All the airlines are reducing capacity for this fall, there is nothing unusual. Here is the surprising thing, they also reduced November to the holidays so there will be less choice.”

So far, spring and summer flights have been plagued by cancellations and delays, with some weather-related staffing issues. As a result, American Airlines has canceled more than 30,000 flights. They will discontinue service to Toledo, Ohio. Dubuque, Iowa; Islip, New York and Ithaca, New York.

“While we look forward, we are limited by the resources we have and the operating conditions we face. We have taken steps to build additional buffers into our program,” American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said during the second quarter earnings call.

Other airlines are also cutting back.
“Across the board, they’ve cut capacity by 15%,” Bangs said. “So far in total, airlines have cut 50,000 flights this fall.”

With few seats to choose from, supply and demand will keep the ball out of procrastinators’ court.
“So if you really want to travel this holiday season, look for those tickets. You can always buy the most expensive ticket, if it’s non-refundable, and you can always cash out if you see something better down the road.”

If you’re looking to save money on vacation at the current low prices, consider an October trip with added bangs.
“Historically, October is the best month to travel in the United States, barring any storms. It’s a little late for severe thunderstorms in the north and the snow is very early,” Bangs, a former airline pilot, said of the weather. “Great travel weather, which should help alleviate some of the chaos we’ve seen over the summer with these delays and cancellations.”
