With a passion for travel, Lori Whitehouse retired from teaching 5 years ago and started traveling as a travel agent. She opened Whitehouse Wanderer Travel, LLC, a full-service travel agency planning trips to the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Disney World and everywhere in between.
Whitehouse offers tours for couples, groups, multi-generational families and more. She prides herself on her efforts to accommodate many requests.
“When someone contacts us, they receive a travel planning questionnaire via email,” Whitehouse said. “On the form they can indicate where they want to go, their needs and their budget. After this form is completed, I set up a conference call to discuss options and send multiple itineraries.
Once she completes the booking process, customers will receive up-to-date travel tips and reminders.
“We are here for our customers before, during and after their trip,” she said. “Some customers have not traveled much, and we are ready for them every step of the way.”
The inspiration for the agency came from Whitehouse’s childhood when her grandparents came to Europe and brought her toys from all the countries they visited. Those toys inspired Whitehouse to explore the destinations herself, often giving her children travel gifts for Christmas, “presents that are opened and soon forgotten.”
She knew life after retirement would involve travel, but she wasn’t sure if she could afford it. She and her husband book a cruise on a European river with a good friend who has a travel agency and wants to hire some independent contractors.
“Immediately, I knew what I was going to do for my ‘next chapter,'” Whitehouse said. “I know travel is a big part of that phase, but I also wanted to do something productive and help others.
The White House recently launched a women’s travel group called the Wander Woman Travel Club. More than 300 women have signed up for the club – with expansion to New York, Ireland and Cape Cod planned for 2023.
“The goal is to provide enriching, fun and safe travel experiences for women who want to travel but don’t have a travel buddy for whatever reason,” she says. “Perhaps they are widowed, divorced, single or have a partner who doesn’t like to travel.
Whitehouse Wanderer is affiliated with the UniGlobe Travel Center (UTC), which offers annual conferences, training, vendor relations and professional development opportunities.
Whitehouse in Ft. Participated in the Select Travel Advisor Recognition Program. Lauderdale in 2019 and the American Association of Travel Agents. She said she attends several travel conferences every year to stay up-to-date on travel trends and provide her clients with the most up-to-date travel information. Membership with these agencies allows a client to rely on resources and colleagues without knowing the destination they are looking for.

Whitehouse says her husband, Richard, is her number one traveling companion, and they enjoy performing Masses in different countries in different languages. She enjoys traveling with family, friends and girlfriends and can’t wait until her grandson is old enough to join her on her travels.
Her bucket list still includes an African safari and Machu Picchu in Peru, Australia and New Zealand.
