There are some good – if not good – times to buy some things. Televisions generally go on sale around the Super Bowl, which is when TV makers introduce new models. Jewelry generally sells around Christmas and Valentine’s Day, and President’s Day is popular for mattress sales. So, when is the best time to buy a new smartphone? not now.
Late summer is probably the worst time of year to buy a new smartphone (unless you need to replace a broken phone). why? There are several reasons why it’s best to wait a couple of months before dropping $1,000 on a new device.
1. New smartPhones are coming.
Apple has historically announced a new iPhone every September and then made it available in October. We can expect the iPhone 14 in a few months with a better camera, a faster chip and a few other new features. Maybe not a dramatic redesign, just an updated version.
SAMSUNG is teasing its line of Galaxy Fold smartphones that will be the size of a smartphone (or smaller) and fold into a tablet. SAMSUNG Unpacked is scheduled for August 10. Regardless of what is revealed this time around, it will be available for purchase in October.
Google is teasing the new Pixel 7 with two YouTube videos. That phone will probably come out in October as well.
So if you want the latest and greatest smartphone, you’d better hold off on any purchases until this fall. If you buy a device now, you’re essentially buying last year’s model at full retail price.
2. When new phones are released, older models are discounted.
Apple generally discounts the previous model by $100, as do SAMSUNG and Google.
Cell phone companies may lower the price even further or offer one if your phone is traded in. Unless your phone doesn’t work at all, you can save money or wait a couple of months to get the latest versions.
This is a good time of year to buy a computer or laptop. Back-to-school sales always include laptops and other electronics for dorm rooms and college students.
If you can wait a little longer, the best time to buy any electronics is Black Friday and Cyber Monday, when sales prices drop dramatically.
