Volkswagen It surprised everyone when it decided to bring back the popular Type 2 bus as a new-generation electric vehicle called the ID.Bus. With a new, modern design language and electric powertrain, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz has sparked nostalgia among car enthusiasts. Now, Volkswagen has taken a step past the nostalgia factor and moving forward, and is working on the General Travel concept.
With Level 5 autonomous driving capabilities, futuristic styling and a modular interior, the new Volkswagen Gen.Travel concept represents the future of people. Volkswagen is currently testing the viability of the Gen.Travel concept as a vehicle for family-oriented private car buyers and fleet owners. Based on the results, the production version of the all-electric Gen.Travel will be launched, the schedule has not yet been released.
The new Volkswagen Gen.Travel Concept looks like Sci-Fi
Unlike the ID.Buzz, a modern representation of the iconic VW bus, the new Gen.Travel previews a futuristic design language never before seen at Volkswagen. It looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, which makes even Volkswagen’s latest generation of EVs stand out from the current crop.
The front and rear bumpers here have curved designs and host modern LED light units. The front profile of the Gen.Travel gets large looking C-shaped LED daytime running lights with stacked LED projectors inside. At the rear, there are vertical LED strips on the corners behind the wheel arches, with an additional LED strip on the width below the rear windscreen.
Both the front and rear of the Volkswagen Gen.Travel profile get vertical-flat bumpers, which feature Volkswagen lettering instead of the traditional VW logo. The overall exterior design of the Volkswagen Gen.Travel is divided into two parts. The top of the General Voyager is a glass cabin, which has a clear finish all around and appears to be affixed to the underside of the vehicle.
This top also includes a vertically positioned windshield and tapered edges for the rear windshield. In order to maximize the external view from the cabin, the edge of the window shutters is low. This vehicle has centrally placed wing doors for the vehicles between the flared gloss black arches and the side profile looks cool.
A modular interior that focuses on entertainment and leisure
Volkswagen’s Gen.Travel might look like a futuristic people mover, but it’s nowhere near the traditional MPVs we’ve seen to date. Unlike the usual three-row MPV, Gen.Travel has a four-seater cabin, which features a modular design.
This means the interior is fully customizable for different types of journeys, making Volkswagen General Journey’s ‘mobility-as-a-service’ offering. The cabinet has several human-machine-interface (HMI) elements made using sustainable and recyclable materials.
The seating arrangement of the Volkswagen Gen.Travel module includes a conference arrangement which consists of four comfortable seats with a large table in between. This setup is perfect for business trips or attending meetings on the go.
There is also an overnight arrangement where two seats fold into beds that can be lowered into a fully flat position. In all seating arrangements, an innovative passenger control system takes care of passenger safety.
Another noteworthy feature of the Volkswagen Gen.Travel interior is the dynamic ambient lighting designed to provide occupants with a pleasant environment away from the risk of motion sickness.
It also calms and relaxes the occupants and makes them sleepy and wakeful, with melatonin only affecting its function. In addition to this, Gen.Travel front seats are equipped with augmented reality features for children’s entertainment.
A new-gen vehicle from Volkswagen that prioritizes comfort
For people movers and MPVs, comfort has always been high on the priority list, and Volkswagen intends to do the same with the Gen.Travel concept. The Gen.Travel concept gets active suspension eABC (Electric Active Body Control), which claims a fine-tuned balance of ride and handling.
This system includes sensors that calculate the lateral and vertical movements of the vehicle during acceleration, braking and cornering. Based on the information received, the General Traveler concept optimizes the route and driving style accordingly.
The Gen.Travel concept will be the first vehicle concept from Volkswagen to feature a Level 5 Autonomous Driving Assistance System (Level 5 ADAS). By making the vehicle a fully autonomous machine, Level 5 ADAS enables the Gen.Travel concept to perform all driving tasks in all conditions, with zero human attention or interaction required.
With this, Gen.Travel showcases the best of artificial intelligence technologies from the house of Volkswagen to date. If a production version of Gen.Travel arrives anytime soon, it could be one of the pioneers of Level 5 autonomous driving in the real world.
