Have you ever wanted to travel the world and experience new things without spending a lot of money to do so? It’s a common dream among travel enthusiasts, and it can come true if you’re willing to commit some of your time. Using the app or website, Worldpackers can find experiences around the world that allow travelers to volunteer some of their time in exchange for food and lodging. Typical practices call for 25 hours of volunteer time per week and provide one to three meals a day and a place to stay.
What experiences are there?
Many hosts on Worldpackers offer more than room and board; Some of the jobs you can sign up for are experiences in themselves! For example, some of the possibilities include:
- Gardening
- Party promotion
- Animal care
- Bartering
- Photography
- Picture
- Handwork
- Much, much more
How does it feel to draw and paint on the walls of a social hostel in Portugal for 25 hours a week? Benefits include three meals a day, free lodging, free banquets, discounts on drinks and tours, free laundry and three days off per week to visit.
Or how about creating content for a summer camp in Spain with 25 hours a week with plenty of free hours, two days off a week, three meals a day and free accommodation?
These are just two of the many experiences available in over 140 countries.
How does it work?
It’s a good idea to make a favorite list so that you have some options when looking for a volunteer position. Once you narrow it down, you can apply for a volunteer slot and meet the host. All you need to do is tell us which days you want to start and end your trip. Many popular events tend to fill up, so when you arrive and have a well-thought-out profile, it’s a good idea to try to appear on Worldpackers. Once you are accepted, your host will send you a confirmation. Now all that remains is to meet at the agreed place and date!
why free is it free
While WorldPacker is a great way to travel the world on a budget, the service does charge an annual membership fee. It is not overpriced and is currently $49.00 per year for a single traveler and $59.00 per year for a couple or couples. World Packers charges this fee to support their services, insure hosts and volunteers, and provide included insurance in case of travel mix-ups.
Other costs to be aware of when using the service are experiences that do not include all meals. While not a dealer, food costs can definitely add up while traveling if you’re not careful. For example, if you choose a breakfast-only option, costs can eat into the savings offered by using WorldPacker. Some experiences charge extra during the stay, though it’s only $5 to $15 per day depending on the experience.
Is it worth it?
Financially, Worldpackers is a great way to cut costs while traveling around the world. However, not all costs are financial. It may not be for those who want to trade your time, talent and energy for food and accommodation to go on a relaxing luxury vacation.
For those looking for exciting life experiences that don’t require doing some work while traveling, Worldpackers can be a great way to see more of the world. Hosts always welcome volunteers and strive to make it an experience you’ll never forget, and the other like-minded volunteers you meet along the way can turn into lifelong friends.
