Wichita, Kan. – Wichita State wrapped up the Shocker Invitational in dramatic fashion Sunday at Wilkins Stadium. Both Shockers have two wins in road trips over Northern Colorado (10-1) and South Dakota State (4-3).
Wichita State (23-6) needed just 6.0 innings to take care of Northern Colorado, but fell short against South Dakota State.
Addison Barnard She hit her 11th career multi-homer game, including home runs 60 and 61 in the win over Northern Colorado.
Game 1 vs. Northern Colorado
Barnard recorded her first multi-hit game with two homers and four RBIs to lead the offensive attack. Christine Nelson He had a career high with three hits, including an RBI. Lauren Mills homered and walked twice. Sammy Hood She hit her second home run of the season and Layne Brown Recorded her first career triple.
Alex Aguilar He improved to 5-2 behind 6.0 innings in the circle. She allowed just one run in three innings and a walk while striking out two.
After a scoreless first inning, Wichita State put three on the board in the second. A solo homer from Mills opened the scoring and then an error led to two more runs. A triple from Brown and a single from Nelson put the Shockers up 3-0.
Hood kicked off a five-run fourth inning with a single down the left field line. An RBI single from McKinney was immediately followed by two two-run home runs from Barnard.
Looking for a run-rule victory in the fifth, Aguilar suffered her only hit of the game, all with two outs. A double, walk and hit by pitch resulted in a run on an infield error.
In the sixth, Nelson ripped a one-out single up the middle to start the final frame. After a McKinney fielder’s choice plated Nelson at second, Barnard came in looking to end it. The second pitch of the bat was promptly smashed over the left-center fence.
Game 2 South Dakota State vs
In the final, Wichita State faced a 3-1 deficit entering the bottom of the seventh, but rallied for its first win of the season after trailing in the seventh. They went 0-5 on the day.
South Dakota State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double. Wichita State scored in the third Lauren Lucas An RBI single and a Jackrabbit throwing error allowed Barnard to score.
Neither team would push for three consecutive innings until the seventh.
A leadoff solo home run by Jocelyn Carrillo to start the top of the seventh put SDS ahead 2-1. Carrillo, hitting in the 8-hole, was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. A single in the next at-bat marked the turnaround for the Shockers. Lauren Howell replaced Alison Cooper In the circle and delivered an RBI double for the first at-bat, the Jackrabbits went up 3-1.
Facing a two-run deficit heading into the bottom of the seventh, Wichita State got one out from McKinney, but was thrown out at second on Barnard’s groundout in the next at-bat.
With two outs and a runner on first, the Shockers got three straight singles from Lucas, Jones and Mills. Jones’ single led Barnard from second to make it 3-2. On a 3-2 count, Mills smoked a single back up the middle, scoring Lucas from third and tying the game at 3-3.
Sedlacek, 0-for-5 on the day, came to the plate with the winning run in the second. On her last strike, Sedlacek hit a sharp grounder out of reach from the second baseman, scoring Jones from second for the winning run.
McKinney had three of Wichita State’s 11 hits, while Lucas and Mills each had two.
Alison Cooper He threw 6.0 solid innings until the seventh. She allowed three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out three. Lauren Howell She picked up the win, her 11th of the season, in relief. She surrendered her only hit and struck out one.
