The Lakers beat the Huskies in the finals



Houghton, Mich Michigan Tech fought back to win the final singles title, but fell to Lake Superior State 4-3 at Gates Tennis on Sunday afternoon. The match came down to number 6 between Ricardo Nunez and Raul Volasco.

Volasco won the last point to give the Lakers a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) win. In the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, Michigan Tech fell to 0-9 while Lake Superior State improved to 6-3.

“It was a tough loss,” head coach Christine D’Agostini-Yep said. “We were there until the end and it could have gone either way. I was happy with our effort.”

The Lakers began by taking the team’s doubles point. Nikolai Proszhannikov then defeated Maxens Hammon at 3 singles to tie the match at 1-1.

At No. 1 singles, Vitor Yordao dropped the first set firmly but got a break to take a 2-0 lead in the second. Leading 5-0, Aaron Osmond won four straight games to return to serve, then leveled the set with an ace. Jordao broke a run on his serve to lead 6-5, but Osmond sent him to the final with two unreturned serves. A forehand lob helped Osmond to a 4-2 lead, before setting up three match points and converting the first.

Adam Fenjiro took the first set easily at No. 4, but Jordy Frail put the pressure on at the start of the second as Raton closed out the match. Friel Raton came out of the break and built a 3-1 edge in the third to finish the game 6-2.

After splitting sets at No. 2 singles, Leon Sell served for the match at 5-4 in the third. Sale battled to the wire for a 30-love lead, then served out the winner.

Eli Pinno won the first set 5-2 but won the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2. With the game tied at 3-3, Nunez won two straight games to take a 3-2 lead in the first. Raul Velasco Garcia converted the score after trailing 6-4 and won the third 7-5 in the second.

Michigan Tech next plays at Davenport on Friday, March 24 at 12:30 p.m
