RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – A Reno fashion designer is reaching millions with her design posts on TikTok.

Sarah Hambly was introduced to sewing at a young age.

“My mother sewed her whole life,” she said. “She grew up sewing, she sewed her own clothes and everything, her brothers and sisters did and I had no interest as a child.”

It wasn’t until the death of her father in 2016 that the 29-year-old decided to take up thread and needle.

“I really enjoy the process of creating art professionally and trying to express yourself as a part of your life,” Hamby said.

At that time she was still in school for photography and design was also a hobby.

“Mostly it’s because I want to get into fashion photography like Vogue,” says Hamby. “At the time, I couldn’t find the stylist or beautiful clothes I wanted to photograph. So, I thought, ‘Well, if I don’t have them, I can try to make them.’ I started adding my photos in my own clothes.

In the year In 2020, Covid lockdowns and other bankruptcy sent the self-taught designer to TikTok.

“I lost my grandmother to covid at the beginning of covid, she was in her 90s…and fortunately, I knew that art was a way of healing and I made a lot of art and shared it. With the Internet,” Hamley said.

Things took a turn for the worse in February of that year when she posted part one of a series recapping Arianna Grande’s Grammy outfit.

“At 10 o’clock that night I was like, ‘OK, we’re getting to two million points,’ and then I went to bed and the next morning it was like 16 million and then it just kept getting higher and higher and I was more shocked,” Hamley said.

That video now has 25 million views and catapulted Hamby’s channel, which now has 2.7 million followers and nearly 88 million likes.

“TikTok noticed and the people behind TikTok were like, ‘Hey, do you want to come and do prom week for us? Like a DIY prom dress,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I want to do this,’” she said. “Then Netflix do one for us and then another company and the next thing you know I have management teams that are like, ‘Hey, we’d love to represent you.’

Gradually, what started out as fun turned into a job.

“My sister works for me, my mother works for me, we have this great team of people who design my clothing brand, manage my offers, do video editing. I mean, if I hadn’t made that one video, all of that wouldn’t have happened,” Hamby said.

Now a full-time creative princess, making cosplay and pop culture-inspired dresses, she is set to showcase her work at the Reno Fashion Show on July 30. In the year She participated in 2018 and is thrilled to be back as the headliner this time.

“It’s me, it’s my turn, it’s so wild! Hamley said.

She is inspired by designers like Alexander McQueen and John Galliano, and her dream is to dress celebrities like Blake Lively or Taylor Swift for the red carpet and inspire others.

The embroidery work of Hambli dresses is done by her. A lot of the clothes you make are just for content creation but will be reused for future work.

Hambly has a clothing line named after her, and is available online at https://officialhambly.com/collections/all. Follow her on social media @officialhambly.
