Allendale, Mich. – Emily Spitzli scored 25 points to help No. 5 Grand Valley State beat No. 22 Michigan Tech 62-54 in the GLIAC women’s basketball championship Sunday afternoon at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Huskies went on a six-game winning streak, while the Lakers won 12Th A straight win.
Michigan Tech (25-6) opened with strong 3-point shooting and held a 16-8 edge after one quarter, but missed each of its final five shots late in the game.
“I thought we competed hard from start to finish,” head coach Sam Clayton said. “Our overall effort was there. We came up a little short against a very good Grand Valley State team. They deserve credit for how they played. I’m proud of our season and the tournament and hopefully we can get another shot. in the NCAA tournament.”
Alex Rohndorf led Tech with 19 points on an efficient 7-of-11 six field goal attempts. Isabella Lenz added 15 points and a team-high 6 assists.
“Alex did a ton for us on both ends of the floor today,” Clayton said. “It means a lot to do this as a senior on this team.”
The Lakers outscored the Huskies 20-12 in the second quarter to tie the score 28-28 at halftime. The teams traded leads in the third quarter before Nicole Kamin scored eight points in the fourth for Grand Valley State (19-2).
Trailing by five with a minute left, Kamin, Eli Droste, Hannah Kulas and Hadley Miller made free throws for GVSU.
Michigan Tech shot 33 percent (19-58) overall, but struggled from the 3-point line starting in the second quarter and finished 9-for-32 (28.1 percent) from downtown.
Tech was also in foul trouble at times, and the Lakers sank 19 of 25 free throws. Sarah Dax and Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with seven rebounds each, but Grand Valley State won the division 36-32, including nine on the offensive glass.
Michigan Tech had 15 turnovers and 12 turnovers. Tessa Leece and Katelyn Meister each contributed 16 minutes off the bench, combining for six points.
Michigan Tech was ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Midwest Region on Wednesday behind Ashland, Drury and Grand Valley State. The NCAA Selection Show, which announces the at-large bids, begins Sunday night at 10:30 pm EST on NCAA.com.
The NCAA Midwest Region quarterfinals begin Friday, March 10 against the tournament’s host No. 1 seed.
