NCAA – Michigan Tech women’s tennis has received an at-large bid to the Division II Midwest Region Tournament, the NCAA selection committee announced Monday night. The Huskies (9-7, 5-2 GLIAC) will make their fourth straight appearance since 1975-76 and first since 2007-08 (16 seasons) on Monday, May 1 against Wayne State (20-3) at 11:30 a.m. EST
Indianapolis (17-5) receives the top seed in the region and hosts half of the draw. No. 7 seed Michigan Tech will play the No. 2 seed Warriors in Detroit. All three matches in the Midwest will be played on the Detroit Mercy tennis courts, weather permitting. The winner will face either No. 3 seed Grand Valley State (14-6) or No. 4 seed Tiffin (18-6) on May 2 at 1 p.m.
Sixteen teams from eight regions advanced to the 2023 DII Women’s Tennis National Championships in Orlando, Florida, May 11-16 at the USTA National Campus.
Tech made the NCAA Region Tournament in 2007-08, 2003-04 and 2001-02, all under head coach Mike Axford. The team advanced to the second round in 2003-04 and is 1-3 all-time in NCAA Tournaments.
Fourth-year head coach Christine D’Agostini-Yep led the 44th-ranked Huskies to a 4-1 win over Davenport in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament before falling to eventual champion Wayne State 4-0. The Huskies feature the No. 31-ranked doubles pair in Division II (Dominika Bobick and Grace Island).
Forty-eight (48) teams were named during the NCAA’s selection show on its website. Of those 48, they knew 20 were their respective conference champions before the event.
