Big Rapids, Mich. – No. 14 Michigan Tech 1-0 Ferris State Friday at Ewigleben Ice Arena. Hobey Baker and Mike Richter Award candidate Blake Pattila extended his national streak to six and the school-record career streak to 16 as he hit his 50th career game.
“I liked our play outside of the goalie,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “This is not an easy place to win. Everyone played well and we moved the ball well and played quickly. We didn’t score on the power play but we had quality chances. Their goalkeeping was fantastic.”
Kyle Kukkonen scored the game-winning goal with 12.8 seconds left in the first period. Jake Crespi headed in a cross from the middle for Kukkonen to score his ninth goal of the season. Logan Pettilam also assisted.
Blake Pietila stopped five shots in the first, nine in the second and seven in the third. He had a big block to keep it scoreless in the first half.
Both teams went scoreless on the power play. Tech had six attempts and Ferris had five. Tristan Ashbrook had two singles in the second inning on a human advantage. Nick Nardella had several quality chances on the power play and had five shots on goal.
FSU (10-11-2, 7-7-1 CCHA) hit the crossbar early in the third. The home team added an extra striker late in the game but could not control the game. Ryland Mosley had a chance at an empty net but his shot soared in front like a defender dove.
Patilla’s shutouts this season were against Alaska, St. Lawrence (2), Lake Superior State, St. Thomas and Ferris State. It was the second straight Friday with a slow day. Blake’s 50 wins are third in program history behind Bruce Horsch (58) and Jamie Phillips (57).
The Huskies improved to 16-7-3 overall and 9-5-3 in the CCHA.
The two teams will meet for the third time this season and wrap up their only CCHA series Saturday at 6:07 p.m.
