Cal men’s, women’s cross country head to Riverside Saturday

Berkeley – California cross country returns to the course on Sept. 17 at the UCR Invitational. The action will take place at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course with the women’s 6,000-meter run at 7:15 a.m., followed by the men’s 8,000-meter race at 7:50 p.m.

The men’s team enters Saturday’s tournament with a second-place finish at the USF Invitational on Sept. 3. The Bears’ young roster will represent the blue and gold again this Saturday as nine freshmen from both the men’s and women’s teams are on the toe line at the UCR Invitational.

The men’s team will look to build on its momentum following the USF Invitational, with Carney, McQuiddy and Lee all returning to the lineup in the 8,000 meters.

On the women’s side, the top three Cal finishers at the USF Invitational — Black, Weiner and Hart — will also run the 6,000 meters again. They join Claire Irby She will play her first season at the UCR Invitational. Yerby was consistently among the women’s top five finishers last season and set her personal best in the 6,000 meters at the 2021 Sac State Invitational (22:33.6).

“I’m excited to be back racing this weekend,” Yerby said. “Watching everyone compete at the USF Invitational makes me excited to move forward and I can’t wait to join them on the course.”

“Going into this race, we’re all trying to focus on running as a pack so we can feed off our energy and work together,” Yerby added. “We also took this tournament as an opportunity to practice this course because we will be back here in October for the Pac-12 Championships.”
