Kaspersky has identified a new rootkit malware affecting Gigabyte and ASUS motherboards. The malware was found on private individuals living in China, Vietnam, Iran, and Russia, and could be detected by intrusion and prevention systems.
TL; DR: Rootkit malware is particularly malicious because it runs before the operating system starts. Even if the malicious files are removed from the operating system, the corrupted rootkit will reappear on reboot. The only way to remove the malware is to install a new firmware version.
