IDAHO FALLS – Among the news stories we covered this year, 2022 taught us that Eastern Idaho has a thriving business sector.
From new shops opening to repurposing old buildings, entrepreneurs are busy making their dreams come true and serving customers.

10. Biz Buzz: 71-year-old tire store in Idaho Falls under new ownership – October 19, 2022
In October, Tanner Landon, 37, of Idaho Falls, and his wife, Jenna, bought the Fred & Wayne Tire Store at 1970 North Yellowstone Highway from Mitch Quarford.
The idea of buying Fred & Wayne appealed to Tanner not only because it was established, but because it allowed him to make improvements in the business model. He also likes being able to offer different brands of tires, which is not an option at some shops.
One of his mom’s favorite hobbies is riding e-bikes, and Landon wants to start selling them in the future. As an avid angler, the manufacturer of electric fishing rod motors is also toying with the idea of becoming an authorized repair center for Min Coda.

9. Biz Buzz: Nostalgia shop in Shelley’s expands after eyebrow-raising sign – July 6, 2022
A nostalgic treat shop in Shelley that raised eyebrows last year for posting political signs is undergoing a major expansion project this summer.
#Treats offers a variety of nostalgic treats from the 1900s; Among them are Abba-Zabas, coconut flakes, whistle pops (which is similar to the movie “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”), black cows, bottles and nickel nips wax bottles. One of the most popular items is bubble gum cigarettes.
In January, the store moved a few blocks from its former location at 202 South State Street to 326 North State Street. Stephanie and her husband, Flint, planned to add an ice cream bar where they would serve Farr’s ice cream to customers.
They’ve added space for karaoke and an open mic night. A new feature combines an escape room with a haunted house.
The shop’s new building is part of what used to be a motel, and the duo has been hard at work transforming every room into Flintrock Retreat, a series of Airbnb collections for tourists.

8. Biz Buzz: Idaho Falls Man Gives Customers Fast Vehicles and Big Dreams at Off-Road Auto Shop – February 16, 2022
If you spend just a few minutes with Philip Keatley, it’s clear he knows his stuff.
The 21-year-old Brigham Young University-Idaho student recently opened Dirtslayers, an outfitter shop at 450 South Yellowstone Highway in Idaho Falls that customizes and builds anything from off-road vehicles.
Keatley started running the business out of his garage in his Idaho Falls home two years ago, and is now thrilled to have a more visible location in town.

7. Biz Buzz: Owners of new luxury salon want clients to ‘have something to be proud of’ – April 27, 2022
Amanda Mitchell and Devin Pennell have wanted to own a luxury salon for years, and earlier this year they got their wish. The duo opened Glow Hair Co. on April 18 at 348 B Street.

6. Biz Buzz: Local trio aims to ‘rob graves’ and ‘connect communities over coffee’ – June 15, 2022
At first glance, Zacharias Monson and his two business partners, Tim Olson and Zach Mahan, seem like a rough bunch. But looks can be deceiving.
The trio had long drug addictions and have since turned their lives around through rehabilitation and recovery programs.
Earlier this year, they set up an online company called Grave Robbers Coffee that processes and distributes fresh coffee beans to customers. The coffee beans are sourced from around the world and roasted locally.

5. Biz Buzz: A new burrito restaurant opens in Idaho Falls (and later closes) – February 23, 2022
Ever since he was 15 years old, Tyler Carraker has dreamed of owning his own restaurant.
The 35-year-old Idaho Falls man started working in fast-food restaurants in central Illinois, where he grew up. He moved to eastern Idaho 10 years ago and opened Revolution Burrito in February at 900 Pancheri Drive, Suite A. (it closed a few months later).

4. Biz Buzz: 90-Year-Old Business Under New Ownership, Rebuilding in Firth – July 20, 2022
Closing in 2020, Collett’s Pub at 132 Main Street in Firth has been serving customers for 90 years.
Holly Johnson, who has fond memories of eating hamburgers there with her family as a child, bought the 1,200-square-foot space and the old theater next door.
She and her husband Brian and friends Brett and Janice Olive and Shuris Prestwich are working on updating it and giving it a fresh, new look. When we spoke to them in July, they were planning to reopen Colette in September. As of Dec. 31, the owners noted on the business’ Facebook page that they are “excited to reopen as soon as possible.”
