Train travel will be free in certain parts of Spain from September 1 to December 31, 2022, the government announced.

The promotion is applicable for multi-journey ticket journeys on Circanias, namely short-distance trains and medium-distance routes.

The new initiative is designed to help Spaniards who are forced to travel across the country every day due to rising fuel prices, but tourists can also take advantage of this offer when visiting Spain.

Tourists should note that the deal is not valid for a single or round-trip ticket. For Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia services, visitors must select a monthly or multi-trip ticket on the Renfe website.

Single, round trip and AVE trains are not included.

Regional connections connecting Spanish territories or autonomous communities are covered by Media Distancia services.

These could be roads connecting Cantabria, Valencia or Andalusia with cities such as Madrid.

Avant, Regional, Regional Express, Media Distancia and Intercity trains are all medium distance services.

Tourists can visit the renfe.com website for more details and to purchase tickets.

Spanish President Pedro Sanchez acknowledged the current situation. “I want the people of Spain to know that I am fully aware of the daily problems that many people face.

“I know wages are going down and it’s going to be hard to make it to the end of the month.”

This move follows a 30 percent discount on all public transport, including buses, trams and metros.

Popular train lines in Spain include:

  • Alicante-Madrid
  • Barcelona – Girona
  • Barcelona-Tarragona
  • Granada – Cordoba – Seville
  • Granada – Malaga
  • Madrid – Cordoba
  • Madrid – Segovia
  • Madrid – Toledo
  • Ourense – Santiago – A Coruña
  • Salamanca – Madrid
  • Seville – Cadiz
