Mayor Jim Payne announced to the City Council on Tuesday, July 19 that BID board member Kelly Peterson will assume the role of executive director.

After 31 years with the test center, the director of residential services plans to start Aug. 8 in her new role.

BID Board Chair Mitch Ruth Peterson said her experience with community organizations, work experience and vision for a business improvement district were all factors in her selection.

Peterson has served on the Douglas County Board since 2020.

Serving as a member of the Board of Directors for the Development Association, Peterson says, has opened her eyes to the amazing things that happen at the highest level.

“There’s a lot going on in that area of town, too,” Peterson said. “It’s different from what I do, but not really. I advocate for the people in my line of work.

Peterson focused that advocacy on the 89-block area of Belknap Street and the Central Business District, which includes the Business Improvement District.

“It looks like a great challenge, it looks like something different,” Peterson said.

Among her priorities is getting to know business and property owners to identify challenges and opportunities to improve the district.

In addition to providing business incubation and co-working space, the Superior Entrepreneur Center will house a Development Center, Small Business Development Center and Entrepreneur Fund.

Peterson was among local officials visiting businesses with the governor this week.

“I haven’t even started the job yet, but I don’t know any better (way) than to hit the ground running,” Peterson said.

Peterson replaces Lindsey Jacobson, who resigned in April after nearly seven years, the BID announced.

“We had a lot of qualified candidates,” Ruth said. “(Peterson) just stuck with it.”
