Ryanair plans to hire 2,000 pilots over the next three years in one of the largest recruitment initiatives in the aviation industry since the start of the pandemic.
The recruitment period will be added to the current list of 5,000 pilots of the largest airline in Europe. It also aims to increase the number of annual passengers by more than a third in three years above pre-pandemic levels.
“We are excited to begin planning a return to growth in the coming years as we recover from the Covid-19 crisis and reach 200 million guests by 2024,” said Darrell Hughes, People Director of Ryanair.
In May last year, the company had warned it would have to cut 3,000 jobs, but said it escaped without neglecting any of its pilots during the pandemic. Some cabin crew have lost their jobs.
However, its pilots agreed to collect 20% of their remuneration, which will be restored to its original levels for four years.
Ryanair said it needed more pilots to operate its new Boeing 737 Max aircraft; the first delivery of his order of over 210 arrived last month. The new aircraft should help the company reduce fuel consumption, carbon emissions and costs.
Ryanair will start training pilots this year, with the aim of having them ready to fly next summer.
Its investments in aircraft and personnel contrast with difficulties in other industries. In April, more than 18,000 pilot jobs are threatened or permanently lost during the pandemic, according to the European Cabin Association.
Ryanair is betting on the accumulated demand when travel abroad is slowed down. Chief Executive Michael O’Leary believes rivals will not be able to meet that demand, and predicts a 20% drop in the number of short-seat seats available in Europe over the next few years.
