Louisiana Tech University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets are gaining unique experience working on advanced research and technology at the Department of Defense.
The Cyber Innovation Center and Air Force Global Strike Command recently completed the first successful ROTC cadet training program. Louisiana Tech University program funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research at Clarkson, Inc. It is supported.
The program provides valuable experience to selected cadets by conducting excellent research and technology programs as well as contributing to unique AFGSC research-based projects.
“Our partnership is designed to allow and enable collaborative projects between CIC and the Air Force, and I can’t think of a better example of this than the ROTC Cadet Training Success project,” said Melissa Nieman, CIC project manager. “The cadets have gained invaluable experience on a range of technical projects and the command has benefited from further development in digital capabilities.”

Justin Miller, a senior cadet at Louisiana Tech, and Norman Pritchard, a junior cadet at Louisiana Tech, spent eight weeks working on various technical projects at CIC in Bossier City, Louisiana.
These projects have developed systems, concepts and technologies to improve environments including data analysis, decision tools, advanced learning technologies and software automation.
Miller worked with Ruby Shore Software and developed a web application for a team of listener airmen coders to simplify aircraft maintenance.
Pritchard worked with the CIC development team to add value to existing projects to expand the Air Force’s information capabilities.
Both cadets learned about the many directorates within the command while attending sessions during the Bomber Wing’s Operation Air Force.
Miller said his time in the program allowed him to jump into an unfamiliar subject and learn how to adapt and achieve.
“As a Computer Information Systems major, learning this type of technology was new to me. It was a great experience that prepared me for my future career,” Miller said. “It was definitely something I needed and I would do this program again.”

Pritchard says he’s benefited from gaining new skills through coding and programming software, but he’s also gained real-world work experience.
“I’ve never been in an office environment on this scale, and the next time I have no nerves, I can jump right in,” Pritchard said. “At Barksdale Air Force Base, I got a business boost from meeting with management and talking to development engineers.”
