Science, innovation and technology – that’s what New Jersey is known for. It was announced that 45 startups across the state were awarded a total of $3.9 million in grants to help young companies accelerate the development of their technologies and move their discoveries from the research stage to commercially viable products and services.

Through the New Jersey Science, Innovation and Technology Catalyst Seed Research and Development (R&D) Grant and Clean Tech Seed Grant programs, the awards strive to advance innovation to help the state achieve the state’s Phil Murphy clean energy goals as outlined in the new Jersey Energy Master Plan.

“Funding New Jersey’s startups today, like the Catalyst Seed R&D Grant and the Clean Tech Seed Grant, helps ensure a strong economy for the future and furthers Governor Phil Murphy’s vision for the state,” said CSIT Executive Director Judith Shaft. “Having companies in our state during their growth spurt will help promote financial growth, sustainability and economic activity for years to come.”

CSIT’s Catalyst Seed R&D Grant Program awarded 27 early-stage startup companies a total of $2.6 million in support of up to $150,000 in funding for life science startups focused on drug development and therapeutics, and up to $75,000 in R&D awards.

New companies receiving R&D awards are involved in technological innovation in the manufacturing, transportation and logistics, film and digital media, life sciences, non-retail food and beverage, finance and professional services and technology sectors, all of which are identified as target industries. In Governor Murphy’s economic development plan.

“New Jersey’s startups are among the best in the nation and place the state at the forefront of innovation and conservation,” said Debbie Hart, vice chair of CSIT and founding president and CEO of BioNJ. “The Amazing Seed R&D Grant and Clean Tech Seed Grant programs strengthen the state’s commitment to its small businesses and foster growth in a variety of innovative sectors, including the technology, life sciences and clean tech sectors.”

A total of $1.3 million in funding will be awarded to 18 companies selected in Round 2 of the Clean Tech Seed Grant program.

“Under Governor Murphy’s leadership, New Jersey has become one of the best places in the country to grow and develop a company, especially a startup,” said NJEDA CEO Tim Sullivan. “CSIT’s Catalyst Seed R&D Grant and Clean Tech Seed Grant programs enable entrepreneurs to access funding for research and new technologies that not only benefit our society, but also create new high-paying jobs that grow our economy and strengthen New Jersey’s reputation as a leader. Through fair, diverse and transformative innovation.

The Clean Tech Seed Grant Program, jointly developed by CSIT and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), provides funding for R&D activities for early-stage New Jersey-based clean technology companies to help accelerate their growth.
