Here’s a quick summary of recent changes to Castro area businesses. In this edition: Hot chicken and ramen restaurant concepts are transformed into a sushi restaurant and a sofa shop and medical spa open in the Castro.
Nash’s Hot Chicken (3970 17th St.)
Five months later, Castro Nash Hot Chicken & Ramen (3970 17th St.) has closed, and the owners are looking to convert it into a sushi restaurant.
Owner Arron Lai told Hoodline that the place will reopen as a sushi restaurant on September 1.
Nash told Hoodline that after five months of operating Hot Chicken and Ramen, he decided that customers wanted a healthier food option.

Lai told Hoodline that they are still deciding on the new restaurant’s name, and added that the menu will include omakase sushi rolls.
Nash Hot Chicken & Ramen opened in February of this year, formerly located at Thai restaurant Me & Tasty.
The restaurant was added in 2011. Original resident Pica Pica Corn Kitchen was only open for nine months in 2013. The replacement Manos Nouveau closed in 2016 after less than two years; In the year It was followed by Thai restaurant Me & Tasty, which opened in 2017 and closed less than five years later.
Custom Sofa Company (2195-2199 Market St.)
The Oakland-based custom sofa company will open at the corner of Market and Sanchez in retail spaces previously occupied by Barbershop Male Image (2195 Market) and Verizon Authorized Retailer (2199 Market).
During a recent visit by a Hotline reporter, the two retail spaces have been merged into one and the redevelopment is underway.

Hoodline readers may recall that Male Figure closed in 2020 after 40 years in business. The shop opened briefly under new management as Castro Barbers, but quickly closed.
Verizon will close the warehouse in Castro in 2020 after seven years.
Custom Sofa Company currently has a showroom near Lake Merritt. The family-owned business was founded by twin brothers Diego and Damian.
Hoodline reached out to Custom Sofa Co. for comment, but did not receive a response. An opening date has not been announced.

Elena Med Spa (4035 18th St.)
Elena Made Spa, 4035 18th St. (between Noe and Hartford streets), will take over the space formerly occupied by the Unionmade Women’s store.
Unionmade closed its women’s and men’s stores in 2019.

During a recent visit by a Hoodline reporter, construction workers were working on the new business inside the store.
Public records indicate two permits were issued for the site’s redevelopment. The work included removing a non-load-bearing wall and relocating fire extinguishers to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The construction cost is estimated at 170,000 dollars.
