Meet the 2022 Hokies

BLACKSBURG – Mason Nelson is a five-foot eight-foot defender from Woodbridge, Virginia, who played Charles J. in nearby Manasseh. She was a 2022 graduate of Colgan Senior High School. The four-year academy defender from St. James FC Virginia (TSJFCV) competed in the club’s 2021 Under-17 National Team Championship.

“We are very excited to add Mason to our squad,” said head coach Chugar Adir. “She will be a wonderful addition to our team.

“Maison has the ability to play in a lot of positions in the back line, especially in the center of defense.

Nelson, who took over as center-back at TSJFCV, trained under center-back Christian Chiomer and Bobby Puppion and built a former chemistry team with 2022 Tech newcomers, Courtney Anderson and Taylor Price. During the 2018-19 Under-15 division of the Atlantic Division Champions League, Nelson TSJFCV scored 35 goals in 32 league games.

Two seasons later, Nelson led TSJFCV to the 2020-21 Women’s Academy Middle Atlantic Conference title and Anderson and Price led TSJFCV before joining the club in 2021. There, three-year-old hockey, who is home to Tech Newcomer Emma Stanley Club, finished second.

Nelson – born to her parents, Brad and Stacey in Fairfax, Virginia – has a younger sister, Chloe. She aspired to become a physical therapist to study human development at Virginia Tech.

Which schools did you consider? “South Carolina and Virginia Tech.”



Why Virginia Tech? “I chose Virginia Tech because I loved the campus and the atmosphere it offers to the students. It has a great academic reputation and a highly competitive athletic department.”



What was your favorite trip to Blacksburg? “One of my favorite things about my visit was the family-like atmosphere here and how I was able to connect with my future teammates.”



What do you like about the Tech Women’s Soccer Program? “I like the ACC coach, the style of play and the competitiveness.”



What is your football strength? My strengths are my vocal leadership, how to break the lines, my ball distribution and one-on-one defense.



Who is your favorite professional player? “My favorite professional player is Christian Pulisich. I love his explosives and creativity.”



What is your most memorable football season? “My most memorable time was last summer when the TSJFCV played in the 2021 Women’s Academy National Championship. We worked hard all year, so we had to make it a special occasion for us.”



What do you want to learn at Virginia Tech? “I have big plans for human development and I want to be a physical therapist.”



What is one thing you want tech fans to know about you? “I love waking up and spending the winter on the lake.”
