The Department of Transportation is providing close to $ 1 billion to expand airport terminals across the country as bidding authorities and airlines suffer from recent flight disruptions.
The Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday that the expansion of the capacity of 85 US airports will provide millions of dollars each to improve terminals and make them more accessible and sustainable. Airports in Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Washington Dulus are among the airports that receive funding for projects.
Authorities have identified the cost of airports as a means to meet future needs. The aviation system has been heavily congested with passengers this year, and the airline and its management have been blamed for interfering.

Transport Secretary Pete Boutigig told reporters that we have seen airports and airlines struggling to meet demand. “We are very happy to see demand return but we need to make sure it has the capacity to meet it in the long run.”

Biden administration officials have in the past invested in infrastructure such as highways and traffic control towers, leaving the final costs to the private sector. He said this round of funding would change that trend. White House Senior Adviser and Infrastructure Coordinator Mich Landriou said local airline owners and airlines have traditionally upgraded terminals, but the need for federal support is clear.
“I don’t think anyone can say that the system and the level of finances in the United States are adequate today,” said Boutigig. Passenger facility fees will continue to be paid for upgrades, he said.
The department said 70 supports will increase terminal capacity. Orlando International Airport will receive $ 50 million to build four gates, and Pittsburgh International Airport will receive $ 20 million to build a new passenger terminal.
Many projects go unnoticed. “It’s a very, very competitive process,” said Shane Griffin, FA’s co-manager at airports. The Griffin agency has received nearly 658 applications at 532 airports, with more than $ 14 billion requested.
