Just 6.2 miles from the Ferry Building in San Francisco, it’s a world away from the crime, theft, murder, traffic, homelessness and other problems of urban life in the city.
Try a small island that can be explored on foot or by bike in a 5.5 mile loop with 12 full crews working on the island.
I recently brought Photowalks TV cameras Went to Angel Island to explore with my iPhone 14 Pro and fell in love. Please watch the video below to see it in full glory.
he said A restaurant and a Bicycle rental shopNo hotels or other businesses. (You can’t spend the night in bed, but you can. Camp. There are 11 campsites on the island.)
The only way to get to Angel is by ferry – and most people take the ferry from San Francisco or nearby Tiburon to visit.
Angel is the largest island in San Francisco Bay, but as many people know, it is not the only one in the city. There is another very famous island, a former prison called Alcatraz, which attracts 1.5 million visitors a year.
There are no tourism statistics listed online for Angel–but be aware that the street is shorter than Alcatraz.
Despite offering “some of the best views of the surrounding bay area,” Angelou has not received widespread tourist attention, according to the tourism office. “With easy access to great hiking trails and many other recreational opportunities, Angel Island is truly a hidden gem in the middle of an urban bay area.”
We agree. Little people like Alcatraz. Check. Do you like to disappear? Check. An open canvas for great photography and exploration.
Angel Island is her name.
And a practical note: San Francisco suffered Crime wave Aimed at photographers in the near future. Thieves steal expensive cameras and drive away. But there are no cars on Angel Island! You can run but you can’t hide. Another great plus for visiting.
On a clear day there are those great views of the Golden Gate Bridge across the island, or if you climb up you can see Sonoma and Napa counties to the north, or as far south as San Jose. Those great old buildings. (See photos above and below, or see our Online gallery Angel Island here.)
The history of Angel Island goes back to the time of their birth, and then during the Civil War, California was worried that the Confederates would go to California and start attacking, so a battle station was created on the island.
In the year In 1910, Angel became an immigration station, where Chinese immigrants were initially accommodated and often held for a period of time. Then, during the Second World War, the Japanese and German forces were captured before being sent elsewhere.
If you’re lazy, you can pay $20 to take a tram ride, take a guided tour of the island, or walk, which is highly recommended. Head up the hill for killer views of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. (Or you can cheat like me. I visited to get some driving footage for my video, not because I don’t have the driving power. But when we got to the top, I told the operator I wanted it. To get out and walk back. The best of both worlds.)
The ferry ride from San Francisco takes about an hour; The ferry from Tiboron is very short, about ten minutes. Go to for transportation information http://www.goldengate.org
