I-64 expansion, High Rise Bridge expansion project impact travel.

Hampton Roads, Va. – Motorists can expect travel delays as VDOT crews work on the I-64 Southside widening and High Rise Bridge expansion project.

According to VDOT, motorists can expect overnight, one-lane closures with short-term stops, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., while a new overhead signal structure is installed on I-64.

  • I-64 East near Grand Bridge Boulevard (approximate mile marker 292), August 16
  • I-64 westbound between Highrise Bridge and Grand Bridge Boulevard (Exit 292), August 17-18

Grand Bridge Boulevard at Tennyson Avenue and the I-64 ramp will be closed to all traffic overnight, August 14-18, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Follow the following directions:
Traveling south on Grand Bridge Boulevard:

  • Right on Booker Street
  • It remains on Bainbridge Boulevard
  • Left on Dominion Boulevard
  • Complete the direction and turn left/right on Great Bridge Boulevard

Traveling north on Grand Bridge Boulevard:

  • Left on Dominion Boulevard
  • Right on Bainbridge Boulevard
  • Complete the direction and turn left/right on Great Bridge Boulevard

There will be overnight ramp closures on I-64 westbound to Great Bridge Boulevard (Exit 292) from 9 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Aug. 17-18, according to VDOT.

Motorists traveling west on I-64 toward Virginia Beach should follow the detour signs using the following.

  • Exit 291A onto I-464 North
  • Take exit 1 to I-64 East
  • Exit 291B onto Route 168 South
  • Right exit to the Great Bridge Boulevard

There will be another overnight ramp closure on the I-64 west off-ramp to Route 168 south (exit 291B) on August 14-19 from 9 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Motorists traveling on I-64 West should use the following detour.

  • Exit onto I-464 North (Exit 291A)
  • Take I-64 East (Exit 1)
  • Continue straight and take a right onto Route 17/Route 168 South (Exit 291B).
  • Finish turning
