McKinak Island, Mich (WLUC) – Travel + Recreation Magazine has named Mackenak Island in northern Michigan as the No. 1 island in the continental US.
Mackenak Island took the cake from this year’s Midwest Haven magazine list. Each year, for the “Best of the World” awards, readers of the magazine will be able to evaluate travel destinations. A.D. In 2021, Hilton, South Carolina, topped the list.
Travel + Recreation Reports 80% of the four square miles of Lake Huron Island is protected as a government park. Visitors can explore the island on foot, by bicycle or by horse and buggy, but no cars are allowed.

Makakinak Island is home to a grand hotel on a 660-foot balcony where customers can relax with a cocktail. Travelers can choose from 13 different Fuji shops, visit the historic Fort Makakin, see the Butterfly’s House and enjoy many hiking and biking trails.
