Vermont Business Magazine The work to address hunger was recently supported by a $38,977 grant from the Shaw & Starr Market Foundation’s Nourishing Neighbors program to help eligible individuals benefit from existing federal food programs such as SNAP, WIC, P-EBT and free or reduced-price school meal programs.
This funding will allow Hunger Free Vermont (HFVT) to help more children in Vermont have access to healthy food. HFVT trains and assists schools and daycare centers to increase their average daily participation in federal school, child care, after-school and summer meal programs and encourages staff to provide information about SNAP and WIC to the families they serve. HFVT partner agencies serving older Vermonters will receive training on the benefits of participating in SNAP and will be better equipped to help clients apply. This investment will also empower Hunger Free Vermont to provide strong leadership and engagement at the state and federal levels to support policies that support and grow strong and stable federal food programs for all Vermonters.

Free Hunger Vermont’s mission is to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition for all Vermonters. For 29 years, we have focused on breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty for tens of thousands of children and families living in our state. Our work has successfully provided thousands of the most consistent, respected and readily available opportunities to eat the healthy food we all want to stay well while working to overcome economic challenges.
The goal of the Star Market Foundation’s Living Neighbors program is to ensure that those living in the communities that Shawa serves have enough to eat. And shoppers at all 19 Vermont stores can still support a hunger-free Vermont when they cash out a full check in September. Donations made in September will fund Hunger Free Vermont’s work to increase the number of children who eat school breakfast across Vermont.
