Google Travel website to stop creating travel summaries

From 2016–2019, the Google Trips app worked on a small utility that aggregated travel details and stored everything offline. Some of that functionality lived on at google.com/travel after the Android and iOS client was discontinued, but the travel summaries are now gone this year.

According to an announcement on google.com/travel, “Travel Summaries will no longer be available starting May 1, although your travel bookings may still be visible on other Google services. Click or tap the ‘Share’ button to save a trip summary.

This may include past and future trip summaries, the former of which can be seen by scrolling to the bottom of the website’s main tab. These summaries put together flight details, hotel stays and other reservations like restaurants in a nice chronological order.

In addition to what appears in Gmail confirmations, you can manually add places, notes, hotels, flights, trains, buses, car rentals, restaurants, and events. These summaries also offer “discovery” suggestions and “what people are asking” for spending, local favorites, getting around, and events/holidays, as well as travel articles from the web.

It was very useful for upcoming/active travel, great for viewing past trip details and finding places you’ve visited. Google says it saves past trip summaries by sending them to yourself from the benefits menu.

Referring to the Google Maps > Your Timeline > Trips tab from 2020 (which we still have today), Google says, “Travel bookings can still be viewed on other Google services.”

You’ll see the same list of places you’ve visited, but each will lack a timeline function. Instead, you get the ability to see places you’ve visited, destinations, your daily itinerary on a map, and your pictures from Google Photos.

Thanks Darren
