12,000 homes, including 400 previously unserved homes, can now benefit from multi-Gig speeds without data caps, hassles or contracts.
Vermont Business Magazine Fidium Fiber’s multi-gigabit, all-fiber service is ready to order 12,000 homes in Bennington County, including 400 homes that previously did not have high-speed Internet access.
The new fiber network, announced in May, is the result of a partnership between the Southern Vermont Communications Union District (CUD) and Consolidated Communications. Southern Vermont CUD represents 14 rural towns in Bennington County. CUD supports bringing high-speed internet to their hard-to-connect region and has been successful in securing state funding for broadband projects.
Southern Vermont CUD Chairman Eric Hatch said, “This is another exciting milestone for Bennington, North Bennington, Woodford and much of Shaftesbury – especially for those of our neighbors and friends without reliable high speed. “Intensive and many Southern Vermont CUD volunteers have worked hard over the past two years to get to this point. We look forward to the coming weeks and months as more homes join the network and the rest of the 14 member cities participating in CUD connect.
Bennington County is poised to reap the myriad economic benefits associated with better connectivity. According to a University of Missouri study, access to and adoption of wired broadband, such as fiber, leads to greater employment opportunities in rural communities. Additional studies show that high-speed Internet is associated with higher median household income and increased entrepreneurial activity in small towns.
“I’m excited for people in Bennington County to get Fidium Fiber Internet,” said Eric Garr, president of consumer and small business at Consolidated. “I’m proud of this project and how quickly our teams have been able to deliver a great Internet experience. It shows the power of partnerships between providers and CUDs. Working together, we can do incredible things for our community.”
