According to Dublin’s new style influencer, wearing flip flops around town is the ultimate fashion faux-pas.
Amien Broderick, from North Dublin, has parlayed his fashion expertise into nearly a million followers on TikTok and over half a million followers on Instagram.
The 31-year-old has encouraged his male friends, Dubs, to take a little pride in what they wear around town.
“I don’t wear swimming trunks when I’m not in the pool, and I don’t wear tracksuits when I’m not working out. Flip-flops are not for the city, no one wants to see your toes,” he said.
“I also don’t go on dates in shorts and a dress. Trust me, make an effort.”
Damien worked in retail before joining a luxury menswear magazine and eventually Rafon Online, a fashion magazine producing exclusive articles and videos.
His overall aim is to inspire others to make bolder and more personal choices in what they wear, especially young Dubliners.
“I was inspired by my grandfather, who wore clothes every day of his life and started posting the clothes I was wearing on Instagram,” says Damien.
“My platform is all about building confidence in others to wear whatever you want. Try and find your own style. Be yourself. Be individual.
“I think there’s a lot of pressure to fit in with men and young men. Currently it’s Northface Tracks and Canada Goose Jacket.

Flip-flops are a no-no outside of the pool or the beach.
“If you’re young and all your mates are wearing the same clothes, it can be hard to come up with something else. They are going to get you out of it.
“To turn to your colleagues and say, ‘You know what? I don’t care, I’m going to dress the way I want.
“It’s a fine line between confidence and anger, but my confidence is unwavering. I walk down the street dressed like I’m going to a period drama.
“I don’t care what anyone thinks. I wear them for me and I encourage everyone to wear them,” he added.
Men can learn a few things from women in this way, says Damien.
“Women are at the forefront of fashion. Especially since the pandemic, women are becoming real individuals in their style.
“They don’t jump from trend to trend. They’re stuck with things,” he said.
