Sam Zeloff is a popular name on YouTube and technology Twitter. For years he has been documenting his amazing journey of building silicon chips in his garage. What most people don’t know is that Zeloof has been working to take this expertise to the next logical level.

Zelof has teamed up with engineering veteran Jim Keller to acquire a startup that wants to make atomic semiconductor chips, two sources familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. The startup is using “radically” lighter and smaller semiconductor fabs and prototype integrated circuits to produce “much more affordable” chips in hours rather than the usual timeframe of months, the sources said.

The duo’s startup has also received attention from investors. OpenAI is in the advanced stages of an investment in Atomic Semi, participating in a seed round of about $15 million at a valuation of $100 million, they said on condition of anonymity.

He said the discussions are not complete and the terms of the deal could change. OpenAI declined to comment last week. Zeluf did not respond to a request for comment. Keller could not be reached.

The startup’s existence, bilateral partnership and fundraising efforts have not been previously reported.
