DOE announces $ 137M for small business R&D donations

Washington, DC, July 12, 2022 – The US Department of Energy (DOE) today awarded $ 137 million to small businesses in 30 states. The 120 projects connect a number of missions within the department, including clean energy, cyber security, advanced energy physics, and nuclear expansion.

American small business plays an important role in facilitating the transition from innovation to innovation and helping to create a bridge between the scientific laboratory and the commercial market. The DOE Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Awards seek to transform DOE-supported science and technology findings into profitable products and services. The awards also support the development of special technologies and tools for scientific discovery.

Through the federal government’s SBIR / STTR program, small businesses will boost the US economy and generate thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly.

Funded by DOE’s SBIR / STTR program, today’s choices are for Level II research and development. In Chapter 1, small businesses that showed technical feasibility during their support period competed for Phase II funding for prototyping or process development. In addition, the Preliminary II winners competed for the second or third tier of the Prototype and Process Progressive. The Intermediate II prize is $ 1,100,000 for two years. Funding for the selected projects is provided by the DOE Science Office.

Award-winning projects include:

Achilles Heel Technologies, Orem, UT. To understand the vulnerability of very complex and related power systems, especially from cyber attacks, requires the use of new analytical techniques. This project uses the latest advances in mathematical physics and the concept of robust control to create tools to understand the potential disruptions in these systems.

Dissigno International, Inc., Larkspur, CA. Water resource management and clean energy supply are key challenges of the 21st century. The project will create a platform for low-cost solar energy development for water bodies by providing near-zero cost-effective options to improve water quality.

Intergrid, LLC, Temple, NH The US subdivision of the wind market is severely limited by the lack of certified electronic inverter designed for wind applications. This project provides inverter hardware and advanced software controls that meet certification requirements and low costs.

Steam Equipment, Madison, WI Forensic analysis of nuclear particles in the environment is the basis for testing international treaties on nuclear weapons but is not fast enough and accurate for today’s needs. This project will address this need with a new laser-based mass spectrometry approach with high speed and accuracy.

AMPEERS, LLC, Houston, TX New superconductor cable technology is being developed for high-frequency field magnets. This new superconductor cable will bring a wide range of products to high-voltage, compact fusion reactors, as well as pharmaceutical, electronics, energy, environment and security markets.
