The CDC has announced a request for a negative COVID-19 test from air travelers entering the United States from the People’s Republic of China.
Several other countries, such as France, soon followed suit with their own requirements for air passengers from China. Countries including India have extended travel restrictions to countries like Singapore, and Morocco has even banned travelers from China.
Some countries are closing their doors as Chinese tourists prepare to travel again.
Not only are these travel requirements frustrating for Chinese travelers, but their scientific basis is questionable, especially in light of largely relaxed domestic COVID-19 policies.
Travel bans are often aimed at stopping or at least delaying new arrivals. However, the effectiveness of such travel restrictions is questionable, given that China is currently being targeted for the widespread spread of many microbe strains globally.

Additionally, the Covid-19 testing requirement cannot stop the disease from spreading because travelers can only test positive after they leave. Earlier travel restrictions aimed at South Africa, for example, did not prevent Omicron from expanding internationally because introductions were early and distribution came from many countries beyond South Africa. There are options to stop the spread, such as masking or testing and isolation.
The discrimination caused by such an ineffective policy can be long-lasting. COVID-19 is a pandemic and a threat to the health of people on our planet. Therefore, it requires all communities to take measures to face and fight against Covid-19 which contribute to this ultimate goal of death, hospitalization and infections. Any action that increases discrimination against certain populations without general scientific benefit will harm the fight against COVID-19 and others to advance health equity.
Thus, the downsides of these travel restrictions seem to far outweigh their benefits.
