Liz Cheney accused her fellow Republicans of abandoning the rule of law and undermining American democracy on Tuesday night, on the eve of a vote in which she is likely to be ousted from the party leadership by her criticism of Donald Trump.
Speaking on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, Cheney, the Wyoming congresswoman and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said the former president posed an unprecedented “threat” to the United States. with their repeated false claims of the elections they were stolen.
“It simply came to our notice then. All of us who have sworn must act to prevent the unraveling of our democracy, ”Cheney told lawmakers. “Staying silent and ignoring the lie encourages the liar.
“I will not participate,” he added. “I will not sit and watch in silence as others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.”
Cheney did not advance hours before the vote, which will likely see her ousted from her role as chair of the Republican House conference and the highest GOP woman on Capitol Hill.
His dispute with members of his own party has been seen in Washington as a symbol of Trump’s enduring adherence to the Republican party.
A staunch conservative, Cheney was seen as a rising star when she was elected to Congress in 2016. But she broke up with many of her colleagues after Jan. 6. attack at the U.S. Capitol that endangered other lawmakers and left five people dead.
Cheney was one of ten members of the Republican House who voted to accuse Trump of his role in the riot, led by his supporters. He survived a censure vote held by secret ballot in February.
However, his relationship with Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader in the Republican House, has deteriorated in recent weeks as he continued criticize publicly the former president.
Trump has called the parliamentary phallus congressman “warm” and approved New York State Elise Stefanik as his substitute for the role of House.
McCarthy told colleagues this week that “they should anticipate a vote on the recovery of the conference presidency” on Wednesday.
“Having heard from so many of you in recent days, of course we need to make a change,” he said in a letter, adding that Republicans were a “big store party.”
McCarthy is forming a strategy for Republicans to regain control of the House in next year’s midterm elections, when the party also hopes to regain control of the Senate.
Critics argue that by ostracizing Cheney, the Republican Party will only further alienate moderate voters who shunned the party at the polls last November.
“Ronald Reagan made it clear that calling our party a big store was more likely to attract people, and that’s what we needed to win elections,” Utah Sen. Mitt Romney said Tuesday. “If you reduce the tent to a puppy tent, we’re less likely to win elections.”
But others have defended the decision, saying the Republican Party should choose leaders who reflect the views of most lawmakers who still support Trump.
Kevin Cramer, the Republican senator from North Dakota, told reporters on Capitol Hill that the Trump-era party had managed to attract “working-class Americans.”
“We have this great tent and there should be space for everyone. But not everyone gets to be the leader, ”he said of Cheney.
Cheney will remain in Congress after Wednesday’s vote, but is expected to face several primary challenges in 2022.
