of this month Short talks from the hill Mary Beth Brooks, director of the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center at the U of A Brooks, has held this position since 2018. Before that, she worked in banking for 28 years, more than ten years as president and CEO of Fayetteville Bank.

The Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center helps small businesses thrive. The Center provides one-on-one confidential consulting and guidance to support Enterprise Arkansans in the Northwest Arkansas region. It also offers affordable workshops to help small business owners gain the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.

“A lot of our clients, we spend 20 hours with them to help them launch their business,” Brooks explained in an interview. “So our average for a new business, for example, is 20 hours with one person. Make sure they’ve crossed off the I’s and T’s, make sure the financials are in place and understand how they’re going to market it, and understand their product strategy and things like that.
