Washington–– US Senators John Boozman (R-R) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Ranking Member and Chair of the Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs Funding, have introduced legislation to repeal the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) co-payment requirement. For veterans traveling to medical appointments.
“Rural veterans with limited access to specialty care and VA facilities will be disproportionately impacted by this policy. We must right this injustice. said Boozman.. I appreciate the guidance of the Arkansas veterans who shared their concerns about the cost of getting the health care they deserve. I am calling on the Senate to lift this Veterans Penalty.
“Veterans living in rural areas should not feel responsible for paying a deductible when they go to their medical appointments.” said Heinrich. “That’s why I’m proud to lead Senator Boozman in this bipartisan effort to end this financial crisis and ensure that all veterans have easy access to the health care benefits and services they deserve.
The Boozman-Heinrich bill eliminates the costs veterans pay when they seek VA-approved medical care.
Under the VA’s Travel Beneficiary Program, eligible veterans and caregivers are reimbursed for travel mileage and other travel expenses incurred while traveling to and from home to VA-approved health appointments. Deductibles are deducted directly from the claim before payment. In fiscal year 2021, veterans paid more than $29 million to the VA to travel for authorized health care.
