Following the hype train isn’t always a bad thing.
Being artificial Intelligence agency startup land has become the soup du jour. Companies are scrambling to incorporate AI into their existing business models or transform their transactions so anything that was previously quietly using AI is front and center. Y Combinator’s latest installment is no different.
Angel investor Gokul Rajaram He tweeted. I recently heard from a company in a recent YC group that about half of the class is looking to use chatGPT. Now, with a letter circulating asking AI researchers to pause development, and at the YC demo day next week, we decided to see if that would be cleared up. Turns out, it’s not that far off.
Ninety-one startups, or 34% of YC’s current class list, are AI companies or use AI in some way, according to the Instant Handy online database. If you plan that into Generative AI, you get 54 or 20%. Even if it’s not half, it’s still impressive compared to past teams. In previous years, the highest number of companies using generative AI in a single YC class was nine, and a more comprehensive AI usage count brought it to 44. Both numbers come from much larger units than the current one.
This is not particularly surprising.
