Hyperspace travel explores the unexplored galactic frontiers

Star Wars: Gav and Jory Darragon discover a new hyperspace line.

The story begins in a region of the galaxy known as the Corros System. Two young men, Gav and Jory Darragon, are piloting the ship Starbreaker 12. Their mission is to chart new and uncharted lines of hyperspace. The risks are many, but the profit is more. They just emerge with the battered ship and tear into a brand-new section of hyperspace. Returning to the planet Sinagar for repairs, Gav and Jory face the consequences of their failure, and their new path is a complete mess. The consequences of their failed hyperspace route are dire. The Navigator’s Guild, a group dedicated to promoting and profiting hyperspace travel, suffers cargo losses due to Gav and Jory’s poor line usage.

The Golden Age of the SithWhile using hyperspace travel as an introduction to the larger narrative, it still shines a light on a very important aspect of Star Wars. A galaxy is indeed a galaxy and therefore extremely large. How and why hyperspace travel exists and how they know exactly how to navigate the galaxy is rarely questioned or explained in the films. The Golden Age of the Sith It explains how the galaxy was once a vast, unexplored frontier. More importantly, it explains just how terrifying traveling from star system to star system can be.

Star Wars would be very limited without hyperspace travel.

Star Wars: A spaceship explodes near the sun as it exits hyperspace.

There are countless factors that determine how safe and efficient hyperspace travel will be: fuel usage, obstacles, and hazardous terrain. As with any other journey, there are critical resources needed to embark on a successful journey. Poor planning can lead to loss of time, or even worse, violent death. Watching Luke and Obi-Wan fly off in the Millennium Falcon seems peaceful, but what’s not seen is the painstaking charting that goes into plotting the routes Han Solo will use on his journey. Hyperspace travel is a staple throughout Star Wars. Whether it’s a single X-Wing battle from Hoth to the Dagobah system, or an entire Imperial fleet coming to ambush the Rebel flag.

It is taken for granted, but rarely scrutinized. Since its release Star Wars: The Force Awakens Most of the extended Star Wars universe has been reassembled and scrapped, leaving most of its content from the comics blank and empty. It’s a shame because there was some great content that has now been lost to the wind, but no matter who it is or when hyperspace travel is explored, it’s unchanging in Star Wars. It connects planets, cultures and races throughout the galaxy. It may not be talked about much, but hyperspace travel is easily one of the most important aspects of all of Star Wars.
