ST. george – Along with the old and the new, Utah Tech University is demolishing Nisson Towers, the school’s oldest student housing building, to make way for the new Campus View Suites III.
According to the university’s strategic plan, it is predicted that the enrollment of students will increase from 12,556 students this year to 16,000 in 2025.
With this significant increase in enrollment, Utah Tech began implementing the third phase of its student housing project. The first two phases include the completion of Campus View Suites I and II, located near the corner of 100 South and 1000 East in downtown St. George.
The total budget of Campus View Suites 3 building is 65 million dollars and 55 million dollars have been allocated for the construction. It is paid for through bonds using rents from future residents.
Seth Gubler, director of housing and student life at Utah Tech University, told St. George News that this new addition to campus housing is expected to be complete and ready for student use by the fall semester of 2024.
Students are always excited when we add a new building. There is enthusiasm in the air, and we strive to make each facility a little bit better than the last,” Gubler said.
The layout will be similar to the former Campus View Suites, and Gubler added that they plan to include additional study rooms based on student feedback and possibly a mini market where residents can find merchandise.
John Gibb, director of facilities planning and construction, told St. George News that all of the Campus View Suites buildings were contracted through Leighton Construction Company.
The northeast corner of the campus is fenced off by Leighton Construction, where work is currently underway. Gibb said the company is working on hazardous materials mitigation and plans to have Neeson Towers fully decommissioned by mid-February.
Campus View Suites III is scheduled to become available for incoming students in June 2024 for the fall semester. The existing Campus View Suites buildings were successfully completed on target dates and allowed sufficient transition time for students arriving at the school.
“It’s really a shame that we’ve been delayed for a few weeks,” Gibb said. “It hurts, because if it’s not done, the students have nowhere to go. So we definitely want to predict, look ahead and make sure we pick that target date.
It is said that parking has become an issue for the students of the university as the enrollment has increased. In an attempt to fix that problem, Utah Tech plans to remove the Edith Whitehead Education Building and eventually the North Plaza building.
