Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa has been cleared to travel but will not return to the bench, the team announced Saturday.
La Russa had hoped to travel to Oakland on Sunday to retire Dave Stewart’s uniform number in Oakland, and the team said La Russa would be on hand. Stewart led the Athletics from 1986 to 1992 when La Russa competed for the Athletics, during which time they won two American League pennants and one World Series.
The White Sox will complete a three-game series in Oakland on Sunday, and the team said La Russa will return to Chicago.
Several outlets have reported that La Russa, 77, could be back as manager next week.
La Russa left the White Sox on August 30 for medical reasons. The team then announced that they would travel to Arizona for testing under the supervision of their personal physician.
After beating the Athletics 5-3 on Friday, the White Sox (71-68) are now 8-3, moving into second place in the American League Central, 1 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Rangers.
