Would you believe it if we told you that this was Regina Hall’s first New York Fashion Week experience? We didn’t believe it until she told us herself, at Kate Spade New York’s 30th anniversary, to unveil her Spring 2023 collection. “This is it. This is my first fashion week. I’m making memories with you so that you can be one of my first fashion week memories.” Thanks to Jesus Star said politely.

Along with a celebrity audience that included model Emira de Spain, comedian Zwee, actress Rebel Wilson, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, star of the Netflix series “I Never Met,” Hall was one of many attendees to witness and interact with the experiential presentation at New York Fashion Week. On the spring beauty brand, the Scary movie Students were dressed head to toe in ensembles designed by Tom Mora and Jennifer Liu. From the sophistication of a tiered strip poplin blouse in black/cream, to a waist-snapping tulip-style midi dress in pink plum, Hall was serving up looks that only a self-styled icon could.

Speaking of Ado, we mentioned that Sam Ado was sporting a mini tote in true white, with her Greenhouse Floral Wrap Ring in Multi, and Greenhouse Front Back Tulip Earrings in Pink Multi. Talk about the ultimate brand. “I chose this today,” she said proudly holding her back. “This bag is good because it’s not too big. You can use it and wear the straps long, and it’s great for elbows. I feel like a woman.”

At a presentation at the World Trade Center in New York City, Girls United caught up with Hall exclusively about her relationship with Kate Spade New York, her thoughts on Gen-Z fashion trends, and her favorite fall fashion issue.

Girls United: Take me back to when your relationship with Kate Spade first began.

Regina Hall: “I guess my relationship with tech started when I was living in New York. I think I bought my first Kate Spade bag in the late ’90s when I found out they were doing clothes, probably in the summer. I knew about their bags and their shoes. I think they have really comfortable dresses. For me, I’m going to start the day with something comfortable. I need something, but if I’m meeting friends at night, maybe I’ll have dinner. I’ve been through tight dresses all day. [and] I love comfort. I like it to look nice and have something stylish about it, but I also like it to be comfortable. I’m like, ‘It’s great, but it’s not a crazy effort.'”

What are your thoughts on the representation of black women in fashion and style over the years?

It’s hard to say because we are so influential in fashion and style. We were always there, even when we weren’t invited to the party, you know what I mean? The party was repeating a lot of what we were still doing. I think we capture fashion and style. I think a lot of things are modeled after things we’ve styled or worn and looked stylish just because we were doing them. It goes from the clothes and hairstyles we wear to the clothes we wear [them]. It’s great to see so many faces designing behind the scenes; That’s really interesting to me. I think that’s an area where our influence has always been there, but now we’re really seeing opportunities where they’re giving us credit and being a part of the process as opposed to just being the inspiration for the process.

With New York Fashion Week comes fall, and we love fall fashion. What are some of your fall fashion must-haves?

“I always love a good pair of black pants. I love a good pair of denim pants, high-waisted, you can wear a shirt. You can also wear a good pair of heels with it, and then you can just go out. It’s great for fall. I love a nice cashmere sweater. A good turtleneck is always a must. And basic solids, cream, white, black and gray. Those are my colors. If I want to be smart, I’ll wear red. Especially if it’s autumn, if it’s rich, it’s blood red.

Now we are in the digital age where there are many hacks and trends on the internet. What are your thoughts on Gen-Z’s fashion, beauty and style hacks?

“I like to see the style of new generations. I think it’s crazy. I’m glad they brought back high waisted jeans. And I said, ‘Okay, let’s go, Gen Z!’ I said, and I’m happy with the wide pant leg. There are many things that are very simple but interesting. I love some of the great androgynous looks out there right now. I always like to see what each generation brings to fashion and style, what I can steal, and what looks good on me. Now, I can’t wear these new hot pants with flares and crop tops because I don’t have crop top days. It doesn’t feel like me anymore, but I used to wear it when I was that age, and it’s fun. It’s nice to see young people showing their way.”
