I learned that even though my flight was on time, my luggage might miss my connection.
Our Caribbean island destination was off the beaten path, so our return trip looked like this: a small propeller plane from St. Vincent and the Grenadines to an American Airlines connection in Barbados via Miami and back home to Los Angeles.
When we arrived in Miami, about eight hours into our journey, we were sweaty, but had to collect our checked bags for customs, only to immediately check in again for our final flight to Los Angeles.
This is standard procedure when traveling on a multi-leg international flight and was not only a logistical problem, it caused us to miss our connection home.
Because the flight from Barbados to Miami was almost on time, our luggage took over an hour to get to Kaushal.
While I thought a late flight could cause a disconnection, it didn’t even occur to me that luggage alone could do it.
Our layover in Miami lasted about 2.5 hours, and there was plenty of time to clear this hurdle. But coming back to the US from an international destination, I certainly wouldn’t allow anything less than that.
Going forward, I remember that a longer hold buffer is useful when checking in and out of baggage.
