All seven days of New York Fashion Week, I was faced with the same little wardrobe emergency and lost every time. At 7 AM, in front of a floor-length mirror, I like (like!) my clothes. By 3 p.m., those same clothes were too hot, too cold, or inappropriate for the elements. Instead of focusing on the actual point of fashion week, show off the endless frays and cool runway shows that go home.
This is one manifestation of the dual problem that comes with a difficult transitional climate. No matter how often you check a weather app or pack your backpack, the fluctuating temperatures and unpredictable forecasts between March and April, August and September can test even the most seasoned dressers. “When the weather changes, it’s like you forget how to dress,” says Justricoat founder Natalie Juss. “I always struggle to figure out how to stack up after a hot summer.”
But, Juss continues, tackling transitional weather clothing is like riding a bike — it takes practice and patience. With the right mindset, it’s time to get creative with pops of color and layering, adds LeSet founder Lily Kemla. “For me, that means off-the-shoulder sweaters, ankle socks with sandals, and my current obsession is a long-sleeve tee under a skirt—embracing the ’90s moment,” she says.
What should really be bought in these times? “Transitional pieces from winter to spring are definitely the hardest pieces to identify and style, but finding other seasonal transitional pieces can be easier than you think,” says Lisa Sanchez, The Nine’s in-house stylist. The eternal cardigan
“It’s important these seasons to focus on staples that lend themselves to endless style, and a classic cardigan can do it all,” says designer Jenny Kane. Almost Nothing: Exhibit A: Bella Hadid’s one-arm, one-arm-out sweater design.
There are also the most common cardigan styles, all ready for days when the temperature swings from chilly to sweltering: draped over both shoulders, tied at the waist or closed all the way. In-between shoes
Among designers, editors, and stylists, two shoe styles rose above the rest as the best to wear before (and after) fall. First, walkable loafers to add a pre-lite touch to casual outfits. Second, ankle boots seem like a real winter boot—and warmth—to give you day and night. Just make sure the shades are neutral: Sanchez says they’re the easiest tones to coordinate in late summer and fall palettes, making mornings breezy.
Layer socks
Providing the perfect complement to the summer-to-fall shoes above, and all New York Fashion Week street style was the same this season. Kimla rocks a few transitional outfits where Comme C ankle socks are her must-haves. With sliders, cropped pants and an oversized button down; Or with a tight sweater and a tank.
All-year-round shades
“Sunglasses are often thought of as a summer staple,” he says Bazaar “But I love how the right ones look so cool paired with a turtleneck sweater and jeans,” says fashion editor Kerry Peary. She designed a capsule with Nessie Chem that features matte frames and tinted lenses for a sharp summer-to-fall look (that’s right). If you’re playing it classic, go for a little cat-eye or square shape in neutral matte or tortoiseshell for extra mileage. Whichever pair you slip on, “add a gold chain necklace to get all those vintage Celine ad vibes,” suggests Pirie.
Multi-season midi dress
Here’s a one-and-done essential that you can wear year-round, even on in-between days. Sleeveless or short-sleeved dresses in breathable poplins can be layered with a tissue T-shirt when it’s cold. Until autumn officially begins, more modest cuts are ready as they were. For something extra, Sanchez recommends polka-dot or floral dresses.
The stylist added that Jennifer Lopez’s rotation of winter dresses is a lesson if you need inspiration in the transition weather. The same piece of 80-degree perfection stays relevant on colder days than an oversized sweater with nothing but platform shoes.
Knit Pant
Knit bottoms are a breathable, versatile alternative to jeans or khaki pants, double the soft textures with that cozy new cardigan or try an off-duty model combo with a button down. Juice often pairs them with a long-sleeve crop top for transitional weather: together, they’re “still breezy and light but still layered enough for a chilly night.”
Lightweight jacket
